Ufficiale Italiano in Spagna 1937 - Parte 1

Salve a tutti,
Base - 2 parti di Graveyard earth e 1 parte di Catachan green;
Luci - Graveyard earth
Ombre - Scorched brown aggiunto alla mescola base
Luci estreme - Kommando khaki.

Hello everyone,
after a long break due to the fact that, fortunately, I'm back in the workforce, I decided to take a little break from Zombies and fantasy alike.
Having purchased a blister of Foundry French partisans at £3 at the Salute Bring & Buy, I came back with the urge to devote a little time to the "Spanish Civil War" project.
In fact it was a little more than an year since I painted something for that project.
Wishing to use the Italians of the "Corpo Truppe Volontarie" from Empress miniatures, I was in big trouble figuring out what color the uniforms were to be painted. To understand the problem we must consider that the Model 34 uniform, contrary to what you can read around on the Internet, were not made in the classic gray / green which will be used by our (italian of course ;P ) troops during World War II.
Now a little 'history ...
Italy, having to demonstrate its compliance to the non-intervention pact decreed by a special international commission, initially sent its soldiers in civilian clothing (provided by the army with every label indicating the origin removed) by ship to Cadiz where they were officially enlisted in the Spanish Foreign Legion, or "Tercio de los Estranjeros".
The troops were then formed under Italian direct control and the so-called Italian CTV was born.
I have obtained all those informations in the excellent "Stefano Ales e Andrea Viotti, Le uniformi e i distintivi del Corpo Truppe Italiane in Spagna 1936-1939, Stato Maggiore dell'Esercito - Ufficio storico, Roma, 2004."(The publisher is the The Italian Army Historical Office, so I could not find a better source!! ;) ).
Thanks to the advices from Lorenzo and, above all, Flaminia, I finally achieved the right mix for the so called Italian Olive Khaki uniform.

I've painted a Second Lieutenant (Sottotenente) with the Spanish style rank insigna, a gold star on his chest and beret.
He is from an infantry unit (Red triangular insigna on collar) belonging to the "Volontari del Littorio" unit (patch on left arm).
I decided to do this unit since it was composed of regular soldiers from the Royal Army and not from volunteers of black shirts units.
The colors used for the uniform are as follows:
Base - 2 parts of Graveyard earth and 1 part of Catachan green;
Lights - Graveyard earth;
Shadows - Scorched brown added to the base mix;
Extreme Lights - a little Kommando Khaki.
I must say that I'm satisfied with the result although the painting was relatively long (5 hours, more or less). When I'll paint the regular troops I'll use a different technique and far less attention!! ;)

For now, that's all, I'm waiting for your suggestions which are, as always very welcome ...
Ciao! ;)

  1. A change is as good as a rest. Fantastic as always. Having seen your work 'in the flesh' at Salute this year, I have to say that the pitures don't do it justice. Wonderful.

  2. Other than it's a great paintjob and that the facial work is excellent, what other suggestion should there be as you answered your own question by saying you needed to get them painted quicker. The first one in a new project/unit always takes a little longer.

  3. I'm happy you like it, my friend Lorenzo (Zerloon) always says that if I could paint all my miniatures (as a whole) with the same result of the faces I would be a champion!! XD

    @ Zombie Ad: Unfortunately I didn't even made it to the finals, maybe next year... ;)

    @ TAL: I'll try to be quicker sir! ;)
